encore exchange consignment boutique
A few weekends ago, after brunch at the Jewish deli Zaftigs, Partner and I wandered around Coolidge Corner in Brookline. Pancake-stuffed, we rolled and lolled our way down the street, passing by a sign marked "Brookline Arcade." I was mildly amused, thinking that it'd been a while since I'd been in or even seen an arcade. A glimpse through the window, however, revealed otherwise. A cafe? An optician? Confusion. Clearly this wasn't the pinball/video game arcade of my youth. Investigation and clarification were essential. We went inside. (As I would later look up, this "arcade" refers to the building type.)
Now, I thought I'd heard of every last vintage/thrift store in the Boston area. (I'm a systematic researcher like that. Don't mess.) But no. I was wrong. And, boy, did it feel good to be wrong! Nestled among other local businesses was Encore Exchange, a women's consignment boutique. There were no gimmicks or fancy decor, just good, old-fashioned second-hand goods, murky fluorescent lighting and carpet of an undefined color. I got the sense that I was walking into a grandma's closet; the small store size and conservative, vintage clothes must have come straight from the homes of various wealthy Brookliners. The prices were largely affordable, but not dirt cheap. The big eye-catcher, though, was the brooch display in the window. It was practically Noah's Ark in there, there were so many kinds of animals.

Clearly, Encore is not a well-known hot spot for the 20-to-30 crowd. It has one meager entry on Yelp (review site extraordinaire for young, "in the know," urban things), and all of the customers in the store were generations older than I. All the better, I say – that's one less demographic to have to duke it out over for that $20 ruffled sweater from the eighties.

This table full of vintage makes me dream...
OHH! I would love to be able to visit that store...and look at all the brooches...
Mmmmm...I love Zaftigs. you've made me hungry!
Sounds like heaven!
I love weekends like this! It feels so productive to make a little fashion discovery.
I've been yearning to visit Massachusetts, namely Boston, for so long now! With my new work promotion, it might be in my near future; I can't wait! :)
This place is great, but I usually get stuck at the brooch display and seldom venture inside. Thanks for reminding me of the treasures inside.
By the way, if you have a car, you might want to check out Savers in Dedham.
i love places like that

Damn; you'd make an excellent shopping partner!
What a great little boutique to discover!
sounds like heaven
I worked at Fire Opal at the front of the Arcade a long time ago (when the original owner was still there), and I thought I was the only person ever who went into Encore! I know from vintage jewelry and I thought a lot of theirs was overpriced for what and where it was, but I did find some treasures that I still wear. Next time you go into the Arcade Building, check out the *other* women's boutique upstairs!
There's been an incredible antique jewelry store in my city for as long as I can remember called the Arcadian, and I somehow only realized recently that it's called that because it's in an Arcade -- the structure you're talking about.
What an awesome find. Discovering a new haunt can be near impossible for the fashion obsessed. That picture of the jewelry has me positively drooling.
What a fabulous fairyland of bargains you stumbled upon! I just posted today about consignment: It's so true that, compared to regulation secondhand shops, prices are a bit high. But worth it for higher quality items in great shape, I find. And I'm preaching to the choir, I do believe ...
I'm with Cammila, that tray of jewels looks good enough to eat.
All sort of animals! Oh my, I collect animal jewelry... :-)
I miss Boston...went to BU and graduated in 2003...Encore Exchange was a favorite spot to hit up. I have gotten great stuff there including a pair of vintage Courreges sunglasses that I love. Sometimes the owner hides bags of other goodies in back. Glad to see it's still around =)
