naughty-cal by nature

When in my very early teens, I enjoyed going to school dances and gyrating to Naughty by Nature's "Feel Me Flow." Though not the worst of the hip-hop crop, the music video still had those gratuitous yet ubiquitous shots of mostly nude black girls undulating. Plus, there was that clip with a girl holding a gushing garden hose up to her mouth -- if that's not a phallic symbol, I don't know what is. Nevertheless, it was a good beat to find my rhythm to, and even now as I replay it on YouTube, I'm bobbing my head and jutting my chin out in mock impudence.

I debated whether to name this post "nautical by nature" or "naughty-cal by nature," but given my propensity for playing spy and challenging everything, the latter seemed more appropriate. Moreover, I've only recently in my style come to terms with the maritime theme. With no bashfulness, I submit to you my "lost at sea" dress-up post as evidence. (It was the first dress-up post that I was actually pleased with!) If you read the intro to that post, you'll realize that to say I was nautical by nature would be simply inaccurate. Nautical by experimentation, maybe, but definitely not by nature.

I wore this look a couple of weeks ago, back when the fashion tides were in my favor. (Currently, I'm left stranded on a deserted island with nary a presentable outfit.)

H&M white/blue striped sweater, H&M grey tweed skirt, H&M grey tights, vintage brown oxfords, Peeps feather fascinator from Bona Drag, Gap grey scarf, H&M brownish-grey belt from another pair of pants.

Background image: Random boat sails from Parade of Sails, Beaufort, North Carolina.

I really like this look. You do so much more than just throw on a striped sweater and call it a day. Great inspiration :)

You’re a woman after my own heart, I love the nautical theme, I thought twice about posting the outfit I wore to work today because I didn’t want to seem like a copy cat but I thought hey why not, it only proves great minds think alike . Anyway I love everything nautical and you executed this outfit with great ease. The thing I love about this theme is there is so many ways you can go with it, all out American, military style or simple red, blue and white stripes.
Yours has a very understated chic-ness to it, a bit French dare I say.
I was a bit horrified when this look went nation wide and they where selling nautical things in Primark but luckily people don’t know what their missing and it didn’t quite catch on, at least it appears not to have.

sorry to spam after my long rant but, i love the skirt its a bit spesh ;)

You look so dainty and French. And you'd never know, by the way you put all that together, that it's from H&M and the GAP. Not that it's a bad thing (I shop almost exclusively at H&M!) but I just think it's amazing how your flair and accessory know-how makes it look, literally, like a million bucks.

Also, I like that you did this simply, and not over the top with crazy sailor pants or whatever. I think a subtle nod at a trend is often much more powerful - and classic - than a slap in the face.

Great outfit; I just adore the boots! Gorgeous!

There is no shame in enjoying the people who brought us OPP. If you don't move to that, you might be dead.

Nautical is not a trend - pirates will always be cool.

I didn't realize you were from Boston! I feel really oblivious right now, your profile says you're from Cambridge.

...which is one of my favorite places. My dad went to MIT and works at Harvard now, and I went to elementary school at Cambridge Montessori (hippie parents).

definitely do a where-to-shop in Boston post if you haven't already! I would love it.

thanks, everyone!

simply.steph: thanks! i feel ya--growing out hair is such a pain.

helvetica: i love your style as well; i'm adding you back.

tyjen: go for it! and do show pics!

fashionaddict: oh good, i was trying to make the background compliment my look.

Fashion-DiscipleXXX: i love your stream-of-consciousness comments! and i also love the freshness of nautical ;) man, this look goes nationwide EVERY year...you just gotta make it your own--which you do.

Sharon: okay, so we are SO hitting up H&M together. as you can see from this post, i also shop there tons. thank you for your comment! normally i'd be a bit iffy about being called "dainty," but from you and in this context, it's all good.

Thomas: arrgh, matey. you down with OPP? yeah you know me (is) (not).

i love your scarf & the crazy hair-thingamabob. it`s awesome! it would be even better if it makes noise, like the doodad i was wearing in my hair today! cute outfit, & it took me a few times saying it out loud to realize 'naughty-cal' was like 'nautical'. i`m slow, it`s late, go figure.

rubbish! i bet you'd be able to fashion something out of coconuts in a jiffy if indeed you were stranded on an island :)

yes yes yes! I love the mixing of the two trends together, you always combine things in the most unexpected (yet always so wearable) way!

i don't mind a bit of nautical now and then. every spring/summer it just seems to feel so right.

fashion tides don't seem to be in my favour either! though this - along with broken camera - has made me expand the topics i'm covering in my posts. which is a good thing.

also, still love that fascinator!
