elementary, my dear watson
All I need to transform my web-sleuthing into existence in the material world is a cape. Right now, I am taking cue from literary icon Sherlock Holmes and his tweed cape, deerstalker cap, pipe and magnifying glass. Okay, so I don't have a magnifying glass, but I think I've got the likeness of an optical aide with my geek girl glasses necklace from Lauren. Next...well, I'll have to take a pass on that pipe, thank you. I may be hard-pressed to find such a hat, but that could be my opportunity to diverge from fusty Mr. Holmes-style. Perhaps a turban, for a more mysterious and intuitive means of code-cracking via crystal ball. Or maybe my trusty, perpetually in bloom Naik Fur red knit hat for vibrancy to counteract the stuffy Holmesian cape. The bottomwear leaves all sorts of possibilities; pencil skirts or flimsy deconstructed skirts would surely make the cut for a clever solution, but I think I'd have to stick with shiny blue satin pants or my go-to dark blue skinny jeans if I were doing some legwork around the city. After all, I'd need complete mobility to be able to scale chain-link fences and crouch down behind the magazine racks. The shoes of course, would have to be flats, probably my brown Chloe gladiator-style mary janes.
Last but not least is the cape itself, the inspiration for my investigative inclination. It's a mini-one to be sure (again, for the mobility) and in that archetypal camel color. The cape comes from none other than our cherished high school gal pal, dELiA*s. Should I choose to buy it, you will be sure to find me pattering around on the cobblestone streets, slinking in and out of steamy coffee shops and bookstores as I covertly jot down inspiration, ideas and general gibberish in my elephant-festooned notebook. Better yet, I should wear my outfit as tribute to those sleuths of the cinema while checking out the Brattle Theatre's "Watchin' the Detectives" film series. Chinatown, anyone?

This cape has *haunted* me (which I never thought anything from Delia's could do.) I've even bought others and none seem as cool as it. Perhaps it's just because it's a difficult silhouette for me to pull off so the one I haven't worn yet is of course the one that seems perfect...?
That's hilarious! Most Delia's stuff is inoffensively likable best, but this cape has refused to let me out of its web. Unfortunately, getting the cape to hit at just the right point is hard; capes are very easily unflattering. I don't know your body type, but I suspect this Delia's version - with its tie at the waist - may be the one.
Sherlock Holmes is an underappreciated style icon.
I love that cape.
i've had my eyes on that cape for literally, months, now.
i've never bought anything from delias before though. any feedback on their quality?

jessica: i've generally had good experience with delias clothes. i have some of their sweaters that are surprsingly well made. but it really all depends on what kind of materials you buy: cheap jersey and cotton are always going to fall apart easily, while sturdier knits and other heavy fabrics from the same company will usually hold up significantly longer. my guess (and this is just a guess...) is that this capelette is probably of decent quality, particularly for the price. hope this helps!

THAT cape is from Delias?????? Well, post Forever XXI, Deslila's get's no love :(
Capes are hilarious. And anything that's hilarious should be worn. Great fun :)
riz: dang straight that cape is from delias! never underestimate the power of the tween/teen catalogue.
Camilla: excellent logic. as if i didn't need more of a reason to buy it.... :)
Mila: Good luck with your blog! I have hereby linked you.
Dear Dreamecho,
I am OBSESSED with Faryl Robin because of your blog, but I keep losing my ebay auctions. I think Zappos will be getting an order from me some time soon!
Anyway, I admire your blog very very much. It is my favorite.
Jess
i absolutely love that cape. i've been dreaming about it ever since the delia's catalog randomly popped up on my (new york) doorstep. it was like a sign. seeing it again here is bringing back all kinds of memories.. i should stop torturing myself and just get it.
by the way, i'm loving this blog, and i see that you're residing in cambridge like me! lovely, lovely..
*Jess: thank you! *blush* you should definitely try them out at zappos. you can't go wrong with the awesome return policy.
*Roxanne: cambridge represent! ;) get the cape! and if i should one day spy a stylish, camel-caped girl waltzing around central square, i'll be sure to holler "roxanne!"
cool that you found it on the cheap-ish from delias.
scaling chain link fences? i'm curious...
oh...well, i don't scale chain link fences too often these days...but just in case...maybe playgrounds at midnight... and other tomfoolery.
delia*s? i wouldn't have guessed it. so perfect in cambridge too.
the brattle! :D
oh hey, you might know - there used to be a vintage-ish store on mass ave., pretty much across from Boca Grande Taqueria, i think it was called avalon, but i'm not 100%. is it still there?
you've spent time in cambridge? :)
are you talking about porter square? i don't think there's an avalon there anymore... but there is a new vintage store in that neighborhood called history, and i think it'd be right up your alley. (vintage clothes with actual "story" tags attached.)
I love your pictures !

lived in boston for... 3 years, and later, cambridge for 1. i am very disappointed that the store i mentioned is gone. it had very cool stuff, a mix of old and new, very well done. i got a cool ring from there. it was really halfway to porter sq. tell me the taqueria is still there though!!
just heard about "history" yesterday, as a matter of fact, from a visiting spy. ;)
sweet.
too bad about avalon, though! (a truly good store is hard to find around these parts.) fortunately, the taqueria is still there.
"spies" rock... ;)
I ordered this and while waiting for it found out from Customer Service that it's been discontinued. Rats! Now, I'll be on an eternal search for the cape that got away. Any suggestions for similar capes? There's a somewhat similar one by TopShop, but of course, it's not exactly the same.
that's too bad! i hate when you order things and go through checkout, only to find out a few days later that it's out of stock. grrr! sadly, i don't have any suggestions, but best of luck in looking for another.
I stumbled on your blog and I have a post with almost the exact same title, in reference to a jacket I made that looks just like this one. Crazy.
loopylulu: i think this kind of cape is just begging for that kind of title. ;)
