doubletime
The more mileage I can get out of my clothes, the better. If I can wear an item in more ways than one -- great! And if I can wear it in a completely differently way from which it was intended -- even better! One example that many of us are familiar with is, as Susie Bubble coined it, the "skress": a skirt pulled up to be worn as a dress.
Sometimes, I will consciously try to come up with different ways to wear an item. Other times, I just happen to stumble upon another possibility, just because of the way I have accidentally tossed it on to myself or just by looking at it from another angle, literally.
The other day at work, I was attempting to eat a tomato-based dish (i.e., chili) that would potentially splash all over my pale pink silk blouse. Being the messy eater that I am, I debated whether to fetch a paper napkin to tuck in as a bib. Nope, I decided, I'll just use my cardigan as a bib instead. I was, in fact, also wearing a cardigan. It was just a basic sweater from H&M: button-down, grey, wool and v-neck. So I flipped my cardigan around, such that the cardigan back would cover the front of my blouse, and I tied the cardigan arms around my neck.
While I was eating, I realized I liked the drapiness the cardigan offered. I was reminded of some of the other drapey tops I own. Then...
Wait a minute...
This could be like some of the other drapey tops I own! All I needed to do was button the back! Maybe a little tucking here or there...
Voila! A halter.

This has so many possibilities: I can button all of the buttons or just one of the buttons in the back. I can twist the arms for more structural detail. I can adjust the drape in the front. I can use it as a layering piece as I would any other knitted vest. Plus, this makes for the ultimate day-to-night item: I can bare my arms wearing it as a halter during the day, and when it gets chilly at night, I've got my coverup right there!
Does this call for a fusion of words? Sweathalter...swhalter...
Errr...nevermind.

omg, brilliance.
I like wrap long sleeve collared shirts up as strapless corset-looking tops. It's basically the same concept, so maybe you'd like to try it.
Amazing. I think you just changed my life!
Please blog more!
whoa! awesome idea.
thanks, everyone!
gerry: cool tip on the corset, i will have to try it out. :)
Your ideas on how to wear clothes are SO clever! I usually just leave it at buttoning my cardigans in different ways or wearing things backwards, but I'll definitely new things now!
